Associate Professor, Department of Public Administration and Policy Gregory Porumbescu is an associate professor in the Department of Public Administration and Policy. Prior to joining UGA, he served as a faculty member at Rutgers University Newark. His research as a public management scholar center on the influence of technology on the democratic anchorage of public organizations. This research focus has evolved into a broader research agenda that examines how governments can effectively manage artificial intelligence (AI) applications to enhance transparency, accountability, and responsiveness—particularly in the context of smart city governance. A key focus of Porumbescu’s research is exploring how AI technologies can be leveraged to benefit historically underserved communities, who often face unique challenges in accessing public information and services. His contributions to the field include a series of peer-reviewed articles, opinion pieces, and securing external funding from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, and the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education. Additionally, he serves on Governor Murphy’s New Jersey AI Task Force’s Equity and Digital Literacy Working Group, where he provides guidance on developing equitable AI policies.
